Lab to Tag Synthetic
20/05/07. Synthetic diamonds are becoming a growing threat to real
diamonds. The Times News Network has reported that The Indian
Diamond Institute plans to set up a synthetic testing laboratory in Surat,
India by the end of June.
The Indian Diamond Institute's Executive Director K K Sharma noted that
natural and synthetic diamonds are indistinguishable to the naked eye. "It
is important to distinguish between natural and synthetic diamonds
through laboratory certification. This certification would be offered to the
consumer on demand."
According to a KPMG report, synthetic diamonds pose a double threat to
the diamond industry. There is the danger of substitution and deception
that could adversely affect consumer confidence as well as a threat of
changing consumer preferences.
The Regional Chairman of the Gems and Jewelry Export Promotion
Council (GJEPC) Chandrakant Sanghavi noted: "Synthetic is a real threat
for the industry. As the business develops and people become more
aware of cultured diamonds, the public will demand them."
